In fact, by many reasonable metrics (life expectancy, population size, energy consumption), humans were less intelligent than some species.

Also consider this: there have been humans in history with an "intelligence" 3 or 4 std higher than the mean. Did they take over the world?

There is pretty strong evidence than most of them had utterly ordinary lives. Humans that did take over the world were usually not geniuses.
