When I was doing research at Todai, it didn't feel like a diverse intellectual hub trying to compete on a global scale. It was insular.

Not only universities, Japanese society itself may be highly focused and optimized to people in Japan.

Not a "bad" thing to focus on yourself and ignore the world. But it does lead to decline, irrelevance, and obsolescence.
