Competition works only if the market is fair and cheating is hard. In academia, "cheating" is easy so competition is counterproductive.
not to mention that there is no "fair" way to evaluate research contributions. Peer review is not it.

Peer review does the exact opposite. There may not be a fair way, but there are dozens of ways that are better then peer review.
