So I'm getting a feeling that we may be due for a new wave of neuroscience-inspired neural networks.
Late 2016, deep learning is mature enough that we can start exploring much more ambitious ideas. We have a solid foundation to build upon.

I disagree. I'm going to subscribe to Jordan's view that statistics, not biological plausibility is what's driving today's models.

How do you respond to the AI Winter fear i.e. the pessimistic view that we might not be able to make anymore 10x jumps.

I expect that AI will keep moving very fast for at least the next 5 years. Longer term, it's hard to tell. But I'm optimistic.
