The funny part is how easy it is to detect automatically at scale. Doesn't Twitter employ deep learning people? Nah, never mind.

Can you give an example of what kind of countermeasures you think may be effective?
Anti-spam measures, to start with. If you can reliably detect and block bots, the benefits of using AI for automation are gone.

I think I get as much spam in Gmail as in my Twitter feed. The Internet is difficult. :-(

I'd definitely agree it'd be worth Twitter's time to work on bots/spam though... even if they did nothing else new.
