My favorite form of signaling is counter-signaling, which relies on displaying *taste* or specific knowledge rather than money: hard to fake
The reason ties are used for social signaling is because they're somewhat tricky to tie right. Easy to spot someone who's not used to it.

Signaling is for broadcasting to outsiders that you're in the in-group. For insiders, you'll need counter-signaling, only visible to them.
