I think there are only two ways average people change their mind: seeing someone they despise, or someone they admire, endorse an opinion.

The former is much more powerful. Opinion is identity-based, and identity is more influenced by negative reaction than by positive action.
Basically it's easier to influence someone if they hate you. Fun to think about it.
