Most worrying thing about AI these days is the short shelf life of most research trends. A few months to a year at this point. Flailing.

the field lacks mathematical grounding. There is no theory of deep learning, blurring the line between research & tinkering.

that's so true; it's hard to improve if you don't know why stuff works ... which research trends seem the most promising to you?

this ADHD may also be caused by hype. Researchers don't want to spend years being "wrong" when everyone else is "making progress"

The whole point of deep learning is to do things we don't understand. (That's what the 'deep' means.)
