What's the best / most economical way to estimate how relevant to a classification task a certain feature is?

@fchollet Economical in terms of the # of samples to acquire with that feature? How big is the space of possible features?
@iskander potentially a few k features. Economical in terms of time & computation (e.g. training a RF model is expensive).
