The first ML framework I ever used was raw C. The first ML framework I used *at Google* was DistBelief. I'm old.

I try to explain the state of ML in 1999/2000 and I keep getting caught up in how *nothing existed* except programming languages (and BLAS) so there basically were zero modern parallels to hook understanding onto. But mostly, yeah, it makes me feel old

I used Ross Quinlan's code that came in the C4.5 book to build boosters in C. But I can beat you because then I ported them to C++ so I could use a sockets library (god knows what) to build a distributed boosting system !

Even more fun was the Genetic Programming system in C that I built in 1986 that evolved prolog clauses... it didn't solve towers of Hanoi, but it did make progress. Ahh those were the days.
