My personal (perhaps controversial) take on investing is that you shouldn't buy a specific stock if you're not able to articulate an elevator pitch about what the company does, why it enjoys an unfair advantage, and why it's going to be a clear winner. If you can't, buy an ETF.

Also, you're not super likely to be able to articulate a good pitch unless you work in the same industry or you just spend a lot of time researching companies. Which is why, for the large majority of people, indexes are the best option to beat the game.

Thank you for articulating this so succinctly. I have seen too many of my smart friends be sucked into investing rabbit holes from which their finances and mental health often do not recover. Take the ETF red pill friends

You are assuming stock performance is correlated to “book value” or real performance. Most stocks trade on sentiment. Even there is long term association between “competitive advantage” and stock long term permance you have no way of knowing how long is “long”. My take.

For example $TSLA is way overvalued and has been in that way for over a decade.

While that's true, it's remarkably easy to get the "elevator pitch" from the information superhighway. I mean, listen to one episode of the company in question on "Business Breakdowns" or else and you're equipped.

But if you have an elevator pitch for paradigm shifts, you should invest in those paradigm ETFs via @MotifInvesting http://et.al . to reduce any idiosyncratic risks while benefiting from the upside of technological shifts.

You want people to have a notion of intrinsic value?! Good advice, but tough to heed in the era of memes.🤑

That’s all good but you would be totally missing the other side of the equation which is price. Which kind of explains why the market is where it is now.
