There's even a programmer equivalent: "I use tool X therefore I'm better than those Y plebs". I just hear: "I don't understand the meaning of what I'm doing and I'm scared you'll find out I'm an impostor"

When someone says something like "I own this brand, so I'm better than those who own this other brand", that's a massive self-own. It conveys status anxiety, insecurity, and a lack of self-esteem so bad you need to outsource your sense of worth to brands unrelated to yourself.

I agree brands to make yourself feel good can be superfluous, but I think there is an argument to own brands as a form of signalling to others, i.e. making others respect you due to them.

From a high-tech point of view: Many (e.g. space) engineers consider themselves great, because they can afford expensive machinery and components. Of course, that‘s completely upside down, atavistic magic thinking like eating an enemy‘s brain. As they say: Buy low, sell high!
