What makes a good project leader? Somme thoughts... 1. Commitment. Must *care* on a deep level 2. Ability to relate to team members & users, establish trust and respect 3. Aligned values 4. Deep understanding of the operational reality of the project & surrounding landscape
1 & 4 are likely underrated. You need a real owner who cares deeply about doing the right thing (even when it's hard and creates friction) and takes responsibility, and you need someone who deeply understands the system, both the big picture and the reality on the ground.
“Owner” or who feels and acts as the owner. Those ones are really hard to find.

I totally agree on the matter of understanding the reality on the ground and the big picture. Rarely do both these sides come together in one person.
