What makes a good project leader? Somme thoughts... 1. Commitment. Must *care* on a deep level 2. Ability to relate to team members & users, establish trust and respect 3. Aligned values 4. Deep understanding of the operational reality of the project & surrounding landscape

1 & 4 are likely underrated. You need a real owner who cares deeply about doing the right thing (even when it's hard and creates friction) and takes responsibility, and you need someone who deeply understands the system, both the big picture and the reality on the ground.

Some of the key skills are hard articulate because they are tacit. One that I've found critical is an understanding of context:https://eight2late.wordpress.com/2021/03/02/the-elusive-notion-of-context/ …

What would you say about perseverance? I would say a good leader should be the last person to potentially lose motivation or strength when something doesn’t work and this requires some level of persistence.

Perseverance is super important for leaders. Also key to know when to ditch something that shows no realistic light at the end of the tunnel. Good leaders balance these opposing forces.

Effective communication. Everything else is secondary. If you cannot get the message through to the team, even a stellar team won't know what to do.

Really like 1 and 4. The care to want a greater future for the org and for project success coupled with empathy for the current state, operational reality, and all involved. Aligned values - crucial - but hard to attain. I like a team exercise to align on project values together
