AI isn't just a set of algorithms & software artifacts. AI is also a field of engineering & research, with beliefs, dogma, goals, and accountability mechanisms (or lack thereof). It's a system made of people, a system that makes systems. *That's* the system that needs safeguards.

To use a simple analogy -- the building of highways has ethical implications. But trying to create "ethical highways" is a misdirection. Instead, make civil engineering and urban planning as professions ethical and accountable. And yes, at some point, politics will be involved.

A lot of excitement over AI is rooted in a desire to transcend human biases and decision making Too bad! You can't!!!

I think robotic quadrupeds (aka dogs) wielding guns pretty much answers where ethical AI is going.

ethical is a subjective test. even if you shoot for competition via transparency (eg google could today disclose some parts of AIs' objective functions w/out any outside involvement)... how to prevent IP leakage in doing so? ethical obligations to investors are real too

Can you have “ethical AI” without “Ethical data”?

We - humans, are not ethical, What we create is not going to be ethical unless we ourselves get ethical. It was huge news some time ago that AI is biased, in fact looking deep into it we realised that it's not AI that was biased but in fact, the dataset was not representative.

"Ethical AI" makes as much sense as saying "ethical calculators." It's a tool, people can use it to do what they want to do, hopefully well, or more efficiently. Badly behaved people will use any tool to do the bad thing they're aiming to do. We need ethical people. Right aims.
-
Nope. Calculators do not teach themselves or evolve. AI needs to be inoculated as a safety protocol.
