Important parallel between the disinformation epidemic and the obesity epidemic. Many would say that it is one's personal responsibility to curate one's information sources & exercise critical thinking -- and would also say the same about maintaining a healthy weight. However...https://twitter.com/JacoVerster/status/1449607955486236673 …

Good insights. Got me thinking about our "information health" in general. Can we create guidelines for information, similar to those for healthy food (whole food, natural ingredients, organic, etc.)? There seem to be no line between junk and high quality info atm.

The fact that these are *epidemics*, affecting huge fraction of the population, indicates that there are *systemic factors* at work. We can't fight the issue via appeals to personal responsibility, we must address the systemic factors.

When one person makes a bad choice, it's that person's problem. When 70% of the population runs into the same issue, it is society's problem.

The science was settled. Low fat diet best. Oh, science changed. Low carb diet best. Science changed. Body positive at any weight. What is the systemic issue? It's the lobbyists for mega-food processing companies. Repeal Citizens United.

I would like to see color codes and recommended daily amounts for different types of information. Self-regulation could be fun in that area, i.e. won't happenhttps://twitter.com/trylks/status/928654210924761089 …

In both cases, and indeed in many others, it seems that near the beginning of the pandemics there were a set of corporations across multiple dimensions of the problem that make money by getting people to eat poorly and disagree more strongly. Maybe not causing, but benefitting.

True ... that's why in democracy public interest cannot be financed by private interest, yet that's how the most economically influential democracies have structured their decision making processes, de facto equating themselves to NK, China and Russia.

keep in mind people who watch the most propoganda also produce it (and regardless of their protests can do so easily). perhaps it's wrong to assume you want a (l)iberal democracy- seems you would but idk- assuming that not sure how your theories could be applied here.

Agreed. People consume food and information, but an important difference is that information system also consume people (their attention). I think it is important to educate people about the beasts out there trying to consume them. It will buy some time while we slay the beasts.
