Activities fall on a spectrum. At one end, those where you're judged by your best moments (like research: if you have 10 mediocre papers and 1 brilliant one, it's the latter that counts). At the other end, those where you're judged by your worst moments (like operating machinery)

Most activities fall somewhere in between. In general, you'll be happier and more productive if you pick challenges at the "best moments" end of the spectrum. Seek to do your best, don't just seek not to fail.

Programming in itself is largely orthogonal to this spectrum, it's all about specific applications of programming... Exploratory code for a research project: "best moments" Code for a critical security system: "worst moments"
