Activities fall on a spectrum. At one end, those where you're judged by your best moments (like research: if you have 10 mediocre papers and 1 brilliant one, it's the latter that counts). At the other end, those where you're judged by your worst moments (like operating machinery)

I'm with you, but it's a different kind of risk, isn't it? In a lot of situations, you do 10 mediocre things and you get fired before you do the great one. You have to be willing to accept that and move forward with conviction.
