I don’t know of any company doing that any kind of scale. It’s certainly not true of Facebook or Google.
It is omnipresent. 2016 was definitely the peak year, and though it has receded since on some platforms (most notably Twitter and YouTube), it has not receded on Facebook. Until Facebook and all large social media co’s internal data is audited by trusted academics both of you are wrong. But that won’t happen - we’ve got decades of profiteering ahead. Metaphor wise - we’re in the 60s and social media is tobacco. Tobacco’s got upsides too.
