The early ones are basically what you’d expect - biker gangs with slightly better manners. One, Castruccio Castracani, was praised by Machiavelli for how well he mixed ruthless violence with opportunistic betrayal, c. 1328. 12/pic.twitter.com/sYGC9BSDaU

Siena's “Allegory of Bad Government,” painted a decade later, is a pretty good on what it probably felt like. Fear, “Timor”, rules. On the other hand, the people paying for this art were merchant rulers, justifying themselves. “It’s us or this,” might be the subtitle. 13/pic.twitter.com/FETgKsX2bo

Merchant rulers elsewhere paid for condottieri, at least until the muscle took over. Erasmo da Narni, called Gattamelata (“Honey Cat,” a great mob name) was Lord of Padua, and got Donatello to do him in the first equestrian statue since Ancient Rome 14/pic.twitter.com/oAESayCBuS

Francesco Sforza works for the pope, Venice, Florence, takes over Milian. He posed for his portrait in his beat-up fighting hat, which is pretty classy. Was also besties and hired muscle for Cosimo de’ Medici, merchant powerhouse of Florence. It kind of goes to his head. 15/pic.twitter.com/tUg4QnNcga

“Display” is up there with “pay.” Francesco’s kid, Gian Galeazzo Maria Sforza, entered Florence in 1471 with 1,250 courtiers, 1,000 horses, all in the family colors of red and white. Even Lorenzo the Magnificent, who kept his picture in the bedroom, thought it excessive. 16/pic.twitter.com/D0Fl4k1cCx

Galeazzo, he got stabbed to death, nother story. The main dude is this guy: Frederico da Motefeltro, Lord of Urbino. Shown in this Piero della Francesca, with deceased wife, whom he loved. 17/pic.twitter.com/ghMLGKCrdZ

He’s painted from the left side, because his eye was horribly mutilated in a jousting accident (it was for fun.) He may have cut the bridge of his own nose to improve the range of his one good eye. #YouDoWhatItTakes 18/pic.twitter.com/gTBF3RkDZ4

But that’s not why he’s the main guy. Not just for his massive level of intrigue, warfare, love and betrayal, which occupied most of his waking adult hours on Earth - Twitter doesn’t have enough electrons to tell it... What you need to know is - this guy was a reader. 19/pic.twitter.com/oBPHOopwXR

Three, maybe five people read to him while he was eating. Mucho history, classical learning, maths. When suspected of betraying Lorenzo T.M. Medici, his first question was "can I still come get my book?" 20/pic.twitter.com/3VtWlNplUJ

The STEM stuff was big for war engineering. In his 1482 job application to Ludivico Sforza, Leonardo da Vinci put “I can paint” at 11 out of his top 11 qualities -about where you’d put “have a chauffeur’s license.” Nine of his other reasons are about war machines. 21/pic.twitter.com/4DFf2soqOu

"Engineering" was exclusively military engineering until the 19th century, and even then remained mostly military engineering basically until the fall of the Soviet Union. Consumer technology is an incredibly recent trend.

I dunno. Eyeglasses, printing press, milling, trading carracks. But the big-budget stuff, sure.

Um indeed. The first licensed engineer in the United States was Charles Bellamy, given that title by the state of Wyoming in 1907. Engineering was very much a thing already for dams and bridges and many other civil structures. Licensing came about as a means of accountability.
