The most interesting tension in education is how we develop ourselves entirely through our interactions with our environment and those around us, yet we are not (for the most part) *shaped by them*. Education is a particularly strange kind of open-ended game.

i agree with your conclusion, but i hope 'intrinsic forces' isn't simply a placeholder for genetic determinism. what your thread evokes for me, much more, is something like William Blake's notion of 'Imagination'
