The grammar and orthography of the French language are overly complex for absolutely no good reason and should be reformed. Virtually no one can spell French correctly.

This is one of those facts that everyone can see clear as day but that no one will do anything about because of inertia and attachment to tradition.

Also, this is true for English as well, albeit to a somewhat lesser degree.

I think it's much more true of English than French

Hasn't English vastly reformed in the last 3-4 centuries? It is very hard to read past works in English.

Every language evolves (chaotic drift). Not every language undergoes a deliberate regularization process to restore the "ideal" 1:1 spelling-pronunciation relation For English this could be particularly challenging, due its success spreading over the world and resulting dialects

Well, it does serve a purpose today. A great instance of the Handicap Principle.

Couple of years ago there was an attempt to simplify French orthography. Cannot remember everything maybe remove some of the accents (circonflexe) & ç … there are others I assume. When I first read about it, I said to myself: what?!!! What are they doing. I’m used to it this way

On the other hand, the Greek language was simplified in the 1970s removing all accents except one which tells you where to emphasise. Having learnt the modern version, I feel that life is much easier this way.

As someone whose mother language is not french but have been learning since childhood. It's true french is complicated, 22 years of education and still don't know it well. On the other hand, my english is way better, with some 9 years of education, with way less hours and focus.

Luckily there's a solution: everyone should learn Finnish - you write it like you say it. Problem is, non-Finns don't know how to say it.

You would be surprise. I understand some Finnish because I had lived there for almost a year. And I have a cousin who is fluent in Finnish like any Fin. I still think I can count from 1 -100. 🤔and know the days of the week.
