2 trends that will drive a lot of growth in the next couple of decades: 1. Increasingly more tasks will be handled by AI / cognitive automation. 2. AI systems will become increasingly easier to build & deploy. AI is already well on its way to becoming a generic developer skill.
Perhaps you're thinking of the "AI effect". AI is in fact making fast progress. The part that isn't moving at all is creating *broad cognitive abilities* as opposed to task-specific systems. Partly because it's a hard problem, and partly because no one is looking at it.
