Long term, Facebook and democracy aren't compatible (I don't mean social media, I mean Facebook specifically). One of them will have to give. If the 2016 presidential election is any indication, it will likely be democracy. Everywhere, not just in the US.

Is Facebook a proxy for a greater underlying force? It seems that any platform can create socially manipulative echo chambers. Perhaps the internet as a whole is disruptive to democracy in that it splinters/polarizes opinions via self-reinforcing content recommendation engines.

This is a flaw in democracy not FB. If u stop FB something else will replace it. If people lose morality then they would elect anyone who they feel fulfill their need. Their is a lot of food of thought in 2016 & 2020 turn out.

Maybe your issue is with free speech and the internet? Your take reminds me of the fear Luddites had wrt radio and TV hurting democracy.

To the extent that broadcasters are well regulated, and the internet is not? Free speech already had boundaries in other media.
