Bought my first headset in 2014, feel like very little has changed since (incremental polishing of the tech, nothing fundamental). Sort of works for games, but will remain far more niche than consoles for at least the next 10 years

What do you think it’s missing to take over the gaming industry?

The value prop is incremental ("immersion" is not a must-have attribute of most games unless they're grounded in realistic sensorimotor affordances, like Beat Saber). And the cost/friction is considerable (extra gear, being mostly cut off from actual environment, etc.)

As a result, the only people willing to overcome the cost/friction to unlock the incremental immersion/presence value are a small subset of console & PC gamers. No sign this will change unless VR entry somehow manages to become more casual.

I agree, but the physical aspects of wearing a VR headset and waving your arms around in a space only you can see make it fundamentally non-casual (even if the hardware itself was super cheap and light), so... 🤷‍♂️

Imo it's non-casual because the hardware (and software) isn't good enough to provide jaw-dropping experiences which will drive adoption which will have developers flocking into the ecosystem and make the flywheel spin even faster.

The Oculus Quest 2 is selling about 3 units for every 4th Xbox Series X/S unit sold, roughly. Quest 2, while not ready for the masses, made enough of a difference to get that far. The bigger changes are yet to come, which really shows there's so much room left to grow in sales.
