Let me try to articulate what this means. There are many sad songs in minor keys, which tend to express some kind of suffering, regret, nostalgia -- some kind of painful imbalance. Minor chords are perfect to convey such imbalances. But they're not the saddest songs I know.

The saddest songs I know don't quite express pain, rather, they express the peace & acceptance that comes at the very end of the line. The smile on your face as you depart a life of tragedy -- what's left once the pain has come & gone. The melody to go with this is an upbeat one.

I don't see what's sad about finally being able to leave this world.

Upbeat sadness? https://youtu.be/O9ejXv5Er6M  https://youtu.be/rQiHzcdUPAU  No, I don't agree After pain has come & gone, you have made a life that hopefully is yours Hopefully, the sadness is because it's over, the smile because it was good; not the other way around

Tempus edax rerum Nothing lasts, except the immutable past. When your life is at your past, & your future is negligible, hopefully you can look at your life & smile. Not because you are leaving behind tragedy & suffering, but because what you did was worthwhile & have no regrets

I think you are just increasing the scope of the joyful moment to include the sad part that came before. The celebration at the death of an elder is real, there is nothing sad about it, if you are so, you`re not paying attention.

I can agree. The last movement of Beethovens 6th symphony came to my mind: https://youtu.be/z16zh55I1dU . But I think it wouldn't sound sad for some.

All these assumptions fail when you see Brazilian country music, with sad stories about cheated men, with extreme majors and always on upbeat. They use relatively minor to the tragic/saddest stories instead.
