No need to invoke far-fetched psychological, cultural, or political theories. There are info ecosystems where vaccines are constantly decried as evil, while the miracle cure of the day is getting the spotlight. People who read this stuff every day believe it. How could they not?
And by the way, there's nothing organic about it. They didn't come up with these ideas themselves. They're not actively organizing disinformation campaigns -- they just unwittingly participate in them.
If you want to fix it, you need to go after those who are engineering the disinformation campaigns (sometimes for profit, sometimes just as a way to sow chaos) as well as their enablers.
Keep thinking about what guardrails (aka regulation eeek!) might be effective. What about a more active incentive to interrupt public health misinfo? Or poke at the business model a bit: do misinfo campaigns spread because they make platforms money? Or vice versa?
