It really struck me in early readings on ML how many part of the original theories were modeled after brain function and workings known at the time. I'm not sure what I expected but were barely out of the woods in exploring the complex natural world, much less replicating it

Quibble: "assemble" isn't quite the right metaphor. They grow and develop into the adult form and some key aspects of the organization are put in place by the parent organism. If you disassemble them into individual cells, they can't reassemble.

I always imagined an information death of the universe, starting from DNA self-organizing organic matter into self-reproducing systems and ending with nanobots consuming stars and ordering planets until all matter is information -- a final extension of DNA.
