The switch of many media outlets to a subscription-only model (as opposed to a pageview-centric model monetized with ads or affiliate marketing) has been great. Less incentive to write clickbait, less sensationalism, less reliance on appealing to the lowest common denominator.

Yes… mostly right. But now researched news is behind paywalls and the sensational, irrational, and fake is all free and marketed hard through click bait. Which kinda sucks.

Incentives drive behaviour without a doubt but this is why affiliate marketing is actually a perfect ad model and creates value for the user. If the publisher doesn’t get paid unless the consumer purchases something, the ads must be useful.

Good insight. Key question is what is the market size of those who are ready to pay for ‘quality journalism’. Not so sure. We will see. Clickbait means money - vanity is a great revenue earner and I frankly do not see a sudden surge of altruists giving up easy clickbait revenue.
