The switch of many media outlets to a subscription-only model (as opposed to a pageview-centric model monetized with ads or affiliate marketing) has been great. Less incentive to write clickbait, less sensationalism, less reliance on appealing to the lowest common denominator.

Your incentives shape what you do, whether you want it or not, whether you notice it or not. Make sure your incentives align with your values.

I think you could solve a tremendous number of humanity’s psychological woes by banning all display advertising. Monetizing eyeballs on ads results in the worst possible attention seeking feedback loops 🤦🏼‍♂️

Advertising in general is good for society. It's useful. Display ads are no exception. And the problem I point out above isn't with ads, it's with the incentive of needing high traffic. Many non-ad business models have this problem. And it's only an issue for journalism.

Couldn't agree more. Hopefully there will soon be a "multi-media" service that allows subscription to multiple news sources at a reasonable price for those of us that like reading many different sources to build a more complete view (vs 5-10 separate subscriptions)

Hehe, but if there is such thing... Then they need to somehow share revenue. And if you make it per view / read time / smt else... Back with the click baits

With newspapers even those never bought them got to read them as rubbish or leftovers. Thus spreading good journalism to all walks of life. Reckon articles might need paywall expiry dates so quality articles are still available to those who cannot pay for it.

But also less of the general public that consumes these subscription-only outlets and this general public is being left out with no reliable news source only because they are in poor financial situation...

Except for the incentive to use news reporting for narrative building, i.e. not saying things that upset the political tribe that makes up the overwhelming majority of subscribers.

What about the effects of paywalling most quality information, among which is the rise of fringe and alt-right sources because of their ease of access and social media reach?
