The most common feedback point I give during project reviews and code reviews is "can you make it simpler?", and usually the answer is "yes"
Simplicity is the most important quality of a system for end users and for long-term maintenance. But there's usually a trade-off between simplicity and developer convenience, so unless the system has already been explicitly optimized for simplicity, it doesn't start out simple.
Not just with code, but i believe it applies to every kind of technical/scientific writing where it's best to have at least a version that's simple and conveys the main idea to anyone.
In my experience novel beginner experience it's like a battle between learning the simpler way. Or doing it the way I know with less thought.
Just an anti-simplicity story. A guy wrote the app code so complicated in C++. The result was that his team survived the transfer to Bangalore and became the only software dev team left in US.
i actually love the requirement discussion phase, where you can reduce complexity just by discussion without a line of code written.
