It's also not particularly insightful to point out the complete irrationality of what's happening. It has nothing to do logic and evidence, and everything to do with exposure to well-engineered disinformation. You won't fight that with logical arguments and sick burns.https://twitter.com/MSNBC/status/1428903827273654285 …

Propaganda works, and those people are jacked into extremely well-optimized propaganda delivery systems. It's really as simple as that.

I see many people going, "ok, so propaganda works super well, I guess this is our world now, too bad, we'll just have to learn to live with covid and violent extremism" This is not a constructive attitude.

Imagine a company was dumping poisonous waste in the lake you use for drinking water, and making millions off of it. Would you just throw your hands in the air and say, "ok, arsenic is bad for our health, too bad, I guess this is our world now, nothing we can do here"?

And remember: the problem isn't "free speech", and never was. "Disinformation is a side effect of free speech" is a lie that the polluters want you to believe. The actual problems are the delivery mechanisms and those that exploit them.https://twitter.com/fchollet/status/1416939576317267971?s=19 …

"Human nature has good & bad sides, and social media is just a reflection of human nature, so it includes the bad stuff" is not the wise take you think it is. Disinfo on social media is not an organic side-effect of free speech, it's the product of highly coordinated campaigns.

"we can't fight disinformation because it would be censorship" is roughly on par with "we can't do anything about deadly pollution because it would interfere with freedom of entreprise" as a bad take.

And yet, as recognizably bad as the polluter/enterprise take is… it's had many a loud "freedom-loving" think tank trotting it out every year since that famous socialist Richard Nixon created the EPA.

I think I could almost go so far as to say that if you don't understand the suspicion and distrust of the current anti-vax movement, then you're being as irrational with respect to understanding them as we presume they are being with respect to understanding the vax programme.

It's comparatively easy to agree on what counts as pollution. It's hard to agree on what counts as misinfo. YouTube's current policy is currently "no disagreeing with the CDC", but present CDC itself disagrees with past CDC.

I'm glad the CDC updates its public guidance as it learns more, but debate in the public square is an important part of the societal learning process, and YouTube is part of the public square now.

Some information is more useful to predict the world than others, even if “scientific” is not a “yes/no” property of information.

Pollution seems much easier to outlaw, so what specific option do you propose?

I have a theory that too many connections in society is analogous to too many synapses in the brain. The over connectionism lets counter productive signals propagate and grow. There are benefits to having some throttling of how quickly and broadly information spreads.

Took the vaccine & am happy I took it. This does NOT preclude me from a real risk where a few years from now we find the vaccine caused some bad side effects that are not yet discovered. There are no guarantees in life, this is the hard part: Mass communication of complex truths.
