People have been selling files over the Internet as soon as online payments became a thing. There was piracy on the margins (which may not have been harmful to creators, and benefitted many broke students), but NFTs do nothing to stop content piracy

absolutely. but the ahistoricity is de rigueur for NFT discourse, and for me, coming from a field that also barely knows its history (media art) this is less obnoxious than the "omg why hasn't everything always been for sale??" energy.

I have not tried to sell digital art online, but seems to me like it was always a niche (for games, web comics). NFTs are very hype, but isn't it cool that artists make art and get paid for it, instead of just posting on insta / deviantArt and make money on the side?
