I think it will take some time for me to get used to GradientTape. I have always found that contexts are a little bit magic, so I try to avoid them.
All approaches have their magic. Symbolic gradients use an implicit computation graph with unknown entry nodes. The GradientTape tracks stuff in the background. grads = grad(fn)(params, ...) is pretty baffling at first and takes a while to grok.
