To design a canyon, shape the path of a stream, then wait for a few millions of years. Long-term impact is rarely visible to the naked eye.

This requires the ability to predict exactly what shape of stream will form a canyon over the course of millions of years, and one should perhaps say the canyon was parameterized rather than designed.

plus it's faster just to carve it with your axe the way paul bunyan used to? I don't see why people would do this the slow way.
