The first milestone is almost certainly not a viable product, i.e. one that could be successful in attracting enough users. It’s target audience is the product team.
This is accurate: the goal of a MVP is to take the shortest path to achieving initial product-market fit, but that is not the goal of a "first basic end-to-end system". Before walking you must crawl, but crawling is not a viable locomotion strategy

Ah I see what you mean now. Thank you for clarifying that. I always assumed that those two things were interchangeable, but now I see that that is not the case

Minimum and viable are context dependent upon the problem you’re attacking. If you’re building a system as a product then a minimum viable system is what should be a first milestone, your LCD Minimum = smallest effective dose Viable = what is produced [object] = tool used
