That image showing model building being a tiny component of a machine learning system.
Any other overused truisms that you wish would go away? 
The importance (time/money spent & impact on final product) of the model-building step in an end-to-end ML pipeline depends completely on the task & context. It could be anywhere from 1% to 90%.

Agreed. What that visualization also misses, is that model-building inspires so much data analysis, problem understanding, and human intuition-building for the entire system–all of which are invaluable, and justify creating/maintaining the system in the first place.
