@fchollet , given the current demand to publish in academia, what would be your advise to PhD students who aspire to produce credible work, in terms of :
1. Research ideas &
2. Writing good papers
1. Good research ideas stay close to the fundamental principles of your field. They're simple, theoretically-grounded, and hit close to what makes model actually work. So ignore the complicated architecture trivia, and focus your research brainstorming on first principles.

2. Writing: find 3-5 papers that you really enjoyed reading -- papers that explain things well and that have excellent style (from any time period). Then simply pay close attention to their structure, style, and explanation style, and imitate it in your own papers.
