Some say the key to happiness is the absence of desire, but that never made any sense to me. To be happy and fulfilled you need goals, challenges. The absence of desire is indistinguishable from death.

If you ask me, the key to happiness is self-direction, control over your life. The ability to pick your own challenges and achieve them. Challenges where you can express the true extent of your potential -- because that's what fulfillment is: to express the most you could be.

Essentially: the ability to pick a direction for yourself and go maximally far in that direction. Then do it again.

Agree very much! 💯 Discovering new limits of your own and cracking them is the most fulfilling feeling.

One thing I struggle with, is when you pick a new direction after some time you are not that good at the previous one. I assume it is normal but kinda feels sad to see your performance drops.

I was about to make a quip about how all off Twitter wisdom is footnotes to Plato and Aristotle, but neither of them talk about the freedom from desire. That’s more of a Buddhist thing.

Anyway, I’m with you, I’m also more into Aristotelian maximization of potential.

So for you, power is key to happiness? Not absence of desire... a degree of autonomy over it.

I am not sure about all of your statement, but you are completely correct about the total lack of desire basically being death or suicidal. There's also the extreme of "maximally far". Harmony between desire & lack of desire can constructively interfere for outlier states

If one enjoys the process of striving itself, then an adverse outcome won't take away happiness of the path pursued. Of course definition of happiness keeps changing as one lives. Could be very different for a terminally ill person compared to one who is at cusp of life.
