As a beginner, the first artistic direction you take is always to add more microstructure detail, to make things richer and more complex -- add more tracks, more notes, spend more time on rendering. At some point, you inevitably switch to pursuing simplicity and purity.

Microstructure detail doesn't require understanding the big picture, and it provides immediate gratification. Meanwhile, simplicity requires a deep understanding of what you're doing, from start to finish.

Drawing the purest line requires having drawn thousands of lines. Creating the purest melody requires understanding what music does to the mind. Writing the purest sentence requires knowing what you intend to say.
