Basically, they're not paying you just the value of the work, they're paying you the value of the work plus the private housing tax. Might as well send it directly to bay area landlords -- then everyone can be paid the same independently of location

This is true literally anywhere. Landlords always capture the economical surplus. To benefit one has to pick a place where their economical power is higher than of the average population and hope they won’t be followed by others who would bring more of it or the costs go up
