That's actually exciting. The fact that active perception is not a hot topic in AI is amazing to me, as it's almost taken for granted in our field. Is that bc its hard to build it into AI, or does it represent a fertile avenue for collaboration between cognitive & AI researchers?

Attention allows transformers to change the way that they interpret part of the image based on other aspects of the pipeline/image. This is exactly what cognitive visual attention does: gives us "on-the-fly" flexibility in how we link parts together to form interpretations.

Regarding active perception in AI, I think it's been ignored because it's (currently) inconsistent with batch processing & datasets. You need an algorithm that can make online decisions about how to move the camera based on the previous perceptual decision.
