A common mental model is to see perception as passive -- light hits the retina, generates a signal that hits the brain, boom, you "perceive" an image. Just like image data getting fed into a convnet. In reality, perception is an active skill that has to be learned.

To perceive something, you must first learn to expect it.

Is the cycle perception->action or action->perception?

Perception and a reasonably healthy brain create reality and fills in any gaps in information perceived. When I am asleep, the brain has a mind of its own and creates visions I call dreams.

Exactly. Our brain only “sees” what it wants to see. 1. This is basis of many “magic” tricks 2. With smartphone cameras processing during capture, we’re starting to mimic our own brain. Is there an objective, legal, definitive “true image” any more? 3. Reliability of witnesses
