An individual mind is a small subroutine in a sprawling problem-solving, understanding-generation mechanism that extends across continents and centuries. Civilization, as we call it. It's this mechanism that implements human intelligence in its true form.

When we say "humans are intelligent because they can do XYZ", we usually mean that this mechanism -- civilization -- has developed solutions for XYZ, and that individual humans are able to copy those solutions.

Spiders apparently encode logic and behavioral 'decisions' in webs.
