In general, humans tend to overestimate how much they understand about natural systems, because they can't perceive most of the complexity of these systems. We're surrounded by an ocean of complexity, and because we manage to paddle on its surface, we believe we're in control.

I disagree. Consciousness is merely the thoughts we can remember. People seem to need it to be more complex than that. Why? Obviously dreams that are remembered are an exception, but I don't think they disturb the utility of general correctness of the simple definition.

Do we know of any forces described by physics that exert influence on consciousness?

How would a physicists know what is conscious and not conscious? Many things that are discussed as “Forces” are really discussions of fields and there is no “Force” involved (or not the action-at-a-distance kind of forces), e.g., gravity is space-time.
