The core of teaching is empathy: explaining well means fully putting yourself in the shoes of the learner.

It’s incredibly hard to do especially because you no longer have the blind spots you did while learning.

Also, my understanding of the Behavioral Econ literature is that you develop a blind spot with regards to exactly how you learned something, and how you thought before you knew it.

Being a good teacher is a rare quality. You need to be able to communicate on the human level with each of your students, and have a good real time sense of their understanding along with mastering the material you are teaching

Also my experience, & I think it justifies trying to keep the (number of students):(number of teachers) ratio at 4:1 or lower. Even the most empathic teacher will be able to empathize simultaneously with a low number of students. Requires hi-bandwidth communication & lotsa time.

I wish more lecturers could be inspired by your words. Universities became companies and the explosion of bootcamps and silly 2 weeks university courses are seriously jeopardising the future generations of researchers and technicians.
