I think understanding how music works and understanding how the mind works are too closely related endeavors -- understanding the mind is only slightly more general.

I don't think that's true, feral children don't have speech, I think the brain is very very good at pattern recognition and soaks up new information and new ways to input or output that information very well. We are advanced pattern recognition engines. With souls*. (*concept)

Not sure I fully follow what you are getting at, but as a random aside: I had enjoyed this book which explores music as a fundamental aspect of the human condition and mind, and how the predilection for it evolved.
