The second kind is cognitive assistance: using AI to help us make sense of the world. AI to help us perceive, think, understand. I believe this is where the true potential of AI lies. Today, some applications of ML fall into this category, but they're few and far between.
The last kind is cognitive autonomy: creating artificial minds that could thrive independently of us, that would exist for their own sake. Today and for the foreseeable future, this is stuff of science fiction.
How independently? Most humans would die if dropped alone into a jungle so where do we set the bar? Could it exist and thrive in a sim world?

I think there's a tension in sci-fi where the AI the story is that the AI was created to do the second thing but it turns out it's capable of the third thing. We just can't help it that
our stories tend to anthropomorphize, be it upon animals or AI. Human vanity! 
or we could scrap this 3-points plan as it poses ethical problems regarding individual and collective autonomy shrinking and look more closely into AI-driven industrial automation: long distance operation robotics, individualized medicine, dynamic stocks distribution...
imo, general relativity solves this rather trivially, as no AGI would have more than local effect and tit for tat becomes the logical evolutionary path, as no other game theory approach can compete. I posit any AGI that doesn't recognize this is not intelligent.
It's only science fiction until it isn't. I'm not saying it's going to suddenly appear in the next few years, but that's not going to stop some of us from quietly working toward it.
I wonder if the AI industry wold even notice if the way to do any f those three had been found and announced. They probably wouldn't believe it. Unless they'd done it themselves of course.
