There are three kinds of AI we could be making. The first kind is cognitive automation: encoding human abstractions in a piece of software and using it to automate tasks normally performed by humans. Nearly all of current machine learning & symbolic AI fall into this category.

The second kind is cognitive assistance: using AI to help us make sense of the world. AI to help us perceive, think, understand. I believe this is where the true potential of AI lies. Today, some applications of ML fall into this category, but they're few and far between.

The last kind is cognitive autonomy: creating artificial minds that could thrive independently of us, that would exist for their own sake. Today and for the foreseeable future, this is stuff of science fiction.

Where does the boundary lie between automation and assistance? Google's PageRank definitely seems more along the lines of assistance, but isn't inherently more "intelligent" than a cognitive automation system.

I think this is where NASA’s historic moon-landing design philosophy is. Computers were always supposed to enhance humans and never get in the way.

I always likened it the gunpowder revolution. Using chemistry, you could project your force further. With AI, you can project your perception wider. But agree with some replies saying there is a blurry line between 1 & 2.
