Could it be related to more complex fonts being more interpretable?

How is that unpopular? I thought it was common knowledge amongst designers. This is why most books are printed with serif fonts. One caveat is that with low res screens sans serif fonts with character width are more readable due to the fact that the serif distinctions get lost.

I've designed a couple of things with serif fonts and whenever I ask for feedback "change the font to sans-serif to make it more readable" is hands down the most popular comment, so much so that I sometimes make a sans-serif alternate just to get more useful feedback

Serifs change spatial frequencies and it seems that the closer the spectrum is to 1/f, the greater the visual comfort and it then affects speed and other factors. It happens even in Chinese logograms.

The serifs guide your eyes to the next letter, so you read faster and smoother. If size and resolution is adequate.

I prefer serif fonts in every way--from ease of reading to physical beauty. People who appreciate minimalist aesthetics seem to advocate for sans serif fonts under dubious metrics of their superiority. I think it's style masquerading as erudite sophistication.

I've read that sans serif fonts are supposed to be more readable on screens for people with vision problems.
